Mumbai: Next time you honk unnecessarily while driving, you might end up paying a fine to traffic police.
After the success of its drunken driving campaign in the metropolis, the traffic police decided to launch a 10-day 'No Honking Drive' from Thursday with an aim to prevent motorists honking unnecessarily and reduce noise pollution on the city streets.
"The drive is aimed at preventing the motorists from honking their horns without any genuine reason and creating awareness among the people about the problems caused by noise pollution," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sanjay Barve.
"Tomorrow onwards, our traffic police stationed at various junctions warn the motorists not to honk unncessarily. If required they may fine the motorists. However, our intention is not to fine but to develop a habit of no honking among the motorists," Barve said.
Street plays raising awareness about the adverse effects of noise pollution will be enacted at various junctions, Barve said adding, "Stickers promoting no honking will be distributed to school children. We will ask them to label the stickers on vehicles and tell them to ask their parents not to honk."
